The name Phaeton is taken from Greek mythology. "Phaeton" was the son of the sun god Helios, meaning the shining one; the myth was a symbol of mankind's will to tread new paths, just like Volkswagen, with the creation of the Phaeton. In the 19th century, "Phaeton" was a popular name for gentlemen's carriages.
The Phaeton is therefore the only vehicle from the early period of auto production whose name originates from ancient Greece yet will now live on into modern automotive production. The extension of this classical theme to the production of carriages and cars reflects the prestige and class of our new luxurious Volkswagen Phaeton as well as the production location, the "Transparent Factory".
Manufactured in the exclusive home of the Phaeton; the Transparent Factory in Dresden is a one-of-its-kind architectural marvel that spans an impressive 55,000 square metres. The Transparent Factory is a reflection of Volkswagen’s concept of transparency in the meticulous assembly process of the Phaeton, in many cases, by hand, as a complement to the industrial production processes.
