The additional application is the info page about the research project that the pillar model was made for. The PDF link on it works and directs you to the research paper.
The authors recommend using Cortona3D Viewer, but this curation uses Cosmo Player since Cortona hasn't been added to Flashpoint at time of curation. The pillar model is likely supposed to be embedded in the info page, but no VRML technologies in Flashpoint support this embedding as of now.
The release date is the date the paper was published.
