GhettOut is a simulation of social reality. Broketown could be anywhere. It’s not just the places notoriously known from the media. It could be a normal neighbourhood, where some people don’t have the privacy that most of us are used to. It’s this type of freedom-lacking environment that large numbers of people live in, including members of the Roma and immigrant communities. Most of them received some form of help from their family at some point in the past, so it’s not easy for them to turn their back on relatives. Try living and surviving as a member of a large family constituting a solidarity-based network, and you’ll soon realize that working off the books and a little cheating here or there are often the only things to do.
In 2009 GhettOut won an Honourable Mention at the European Crime Prevention Award in Stockholm. It was in Stockholm where the representatives of Tady a Teď encountered demand for an English translation of the game from NGOs from various countries. This is why we decided to have Ghettout translated, with financial support from the Plzeň Region. Even thought GhettOut draws on our knowledge of social exclusion in the Czech Republic, we’re confident that it can be useful for organizations working with socially excluded people in other countries, as it simulates a life of social exclusion in modern urbanized societies.
